The Richmond Centre for Disability (RCD) is a community-based non-profit, providing program and support services to individuals and their families with a disability. Established in 1985 by a group of dedicated volunteers, the RCD stands today as a vital community hub that provides a wide array of services, including physical activity programs, computer training, and advocacy for accessibility. Over the decades, it has played a crucial role in shaping local policy and ensuring that the City of Richmond remains inclusive and navigable for everyone.

Out With the Old

The RCD had an old website that hadn’t been updated in over a decade. The website was cluttered, lacked good navigation, and finding information on it was very hard.

A Fresh New Start

The RCD approached 14 Oranges in late 2025 looking for help to implement a new website that was better aligned with its current goals of improving the awareness and reach of the RCD. Further, the previous RCD logo didn’t fully reflect everything that the RCD stood for and they were looking to have a new logo designed that would better reflect its current mission. Finally, since RCD is a non-profit with a limited budget, the decision was made to use WordPress as the CMS along with an off-the-shelf theme.

The Approach

The 14 Oranges team worked closely with key stakeholders at the RCD to define the requirements for the website including the primary and secondary goals for the website, as well as the use cases to support and personas. Once the requirements were identified, the 14 Oranges graphics partner, Inform Creative, started to work on the design of a new logo and developed 8 different logo variations for the team at RCD to review. One logo was selected and a few revisions were completed.

After the logo was finalized, the 14 Oranges UX team researched various off-the-shelf WordPress themes that could fit the requirements. A few were identified and presented back to the RCD staff for discussion. The 14 Oranges UX team prepared mockups of the new home page based on two of the potential themes, and the RCD staff used these design mockups to select their theme. Once the theme was selected, the UX team completed additional mockups of key pages and then handed these over to the 14 Oranges development team for implementation. The 14 Oranges development team worked closely with the RCD staff and presented pages for review on the development site as they were completed. When all the pages were implemented, the 14 Oranges QA team performed a round of tests on all major browsers and operating systems to eliminate bugs and ensure that the site met the accessibility requirements. The final website was then presented for approval to the RCD staff.

The Results

The website was launched in early March and was completed within the budget.

The new website has been well received by everyone. RCD also chose to use 14 Oranges to host and maintain the website going forward.

Meanwhile the new logo is now presented proudly at the entrance to the new RCD Centre that opened in April this year.
